Paul Klee inspired self-portraits
March 2017
Students learned about the painter, Paul Klee. We studied his unique style of painting, especially his use of geometric shapes. Paul Klee created artworks with the repetition of shapes, and he also created works that are asymmetrical, meaning the shapes or object is not the same on both sides. We recreated his artistic style by creating asymmetrical self-portraits! The squares were collaged on with tissue paper.
Georgia O'Keefe Watercolor Flowers
December 2016
Second graders have just completed the MOST BEAUTIFUL paintings! These are my absolute favorite! We analyzed the flower paintings of the famous Americal artist, Georgia O'Keefe. O'Keefe would paint flowers as if she was looking at them through a microscope. Students used watercolor and oil pastel to create their masterpieces, and we talked about cool/warm colors, and adding a contrasting color background.

Cezanne Still Life
October 2016
Students have learned about the French painter, Paul Cezanne. Cezanne is famous for his apple still life paintings. Students really observed how he painted an apple to look real---he adds shadows and highlights to make it look 3D! We recreated his still life style by blending oil pastels to create real looking apples! The results look almost good enough to eat!
Silhouette Trees
September 2016
These colorful paintings turned out so beautiful! I am so impressed with how talented my 2nd graders are! Students learned about warm and cool color schemes, and painted a beautiful background, using the color scheme of their choice. We learned about the Atlanta based artist, Kara Walker, who creates beautiful cut-paper silhouettes. Inspired by Kara Walker's use of silhouettes, 2nd graders drew large, detailed trees onto their paintings!

Welcome to 2nd Grade!
August 2015
For the first two weeks of school, students are reviewing rules and safety procedures in the art room. We are creating our first "miniature" artwork, which will turn into a large mural! All students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade are drawing a self-portrait with 1 different color scheme for each grade level. Put them all together, and you have one, GIANT, rainbow mural!!
