Winter Polar Bears
November 2017
5th graders created a beautiful winter landscape painting for our Square 1 Art Fundraiser! We used salt and watercolor to create a snowy, moonlit sky, as well as learning about adding shadows to our polar bears to give them a 3D effect. I think these turned out so beautiful!
Hawaiian Seascapes
February 2017
I love these paintings!! Fifth graders viewed and discussed the colorful seascape paintings from Hawaiian artist, Heather Brown. We learned how she shows rhythm and movement in her paintings within the ocean and waves. Students created their own seascape paintings with emphasis on drawing techniques that showed space and depth. I was amazed how each student came up with their own unique idea, from a warm sunset, to an erupting volcano, from a beach bonfire, to a beautiful rainbow. Finally, we painted the artworks with watercolors for a completed composition.

Self-Portrait Prints
December 2016
We have just completed one of our messiest projects of the year! Students viewed and discussed the famous printer, Andy Warhol, and his Pop Art Portrait Prints. We created our own prints by carving our self-portraits onto foam. Using printing ink, we rolled ink our foam stamps and printed them on paper. I am so proud of my talented 5th graders!

Edward Hopper Houses
October 2016
Fifth graders have studied the American artist, Edward Hopper. Most students recognize his famous painting, "Nighthawks," which depicts several people sitting in a café. As the viewer, you wonder, what are the people doing out so late at night. The restaurant looks bright and warm, but the dark colors and shadows give an eerie or mysterious feeling. Many of Edward Hopper's paintings are of lonely looking houses or buildings. Students designed their own houses, and focused on a monochromatic color scheme. Students chose 1 main color for their piece, but mixed all of their paints, creating tints, shades, and intermediate colors.

Op Art Instruments
September 2016
Fifth graders have just completed their artworks for our Square 1 Art Fundraiser. Our focus was Op Art and instrument drawings. We analyzed the crazy artwork of Bridget Riley. Bridget Riley is a world-renowned artist from London who paints optical illusions (Op Art=optical illusion). Her paintings are made to trick your eyes, and they consist of the basic elements of Art---line and shape! Her style creates the illusion that the elements in her paintings are actually moving! Students are designing their own Op art drawings with an instrument to be featured in the foreground. Such colorful results!!

Welcome to 5th Grade!
August 2015
For the first two weeks of school, students are reviewing rules and safety procedures in the art room. We are creating our first "miniature" artwork, which will turn into a large mural! All students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade are drawing a self-portrait with 1 different color scheme for each grade level. Put them all together, and you have one, GIANT, rainbow mural!!
