Chuck Close "selfies"
February 2017
4th graders have been studying the art of one of my personal favorites, Chuck Close! Chuck Close is an American painter who gained his fame from his "photo-realistic" paintings. When you look at a Chuck Close painting, it looks so true to life, that you think you are looking at a photograph! We were blown away by his work! I LOVE how amazing and real our "selfies" came out!
Radial Prints
November 2016
4th graders have just completed their unit on Printmaking. Printmaking is an art method where the artist creates a stamp (plate). The stamp could be made out of metal or wood, but we carved our stamps onto foam squares. We then rolled black ink onto our stamps, and we printed our stamps 4 times on our painted paper, to create a radial pattern! The colorful results are amazing. I am SO proud of the 4th graders' hard work!
Check out Andy Warhol and Katsushika Hokusai to see some famous printers. I bet you will recognize their work!

Abstract Animals
October 2016
Fourth graders have just completed their artworks for our Square 1 Art Fundraiser. Students learned how to draw their favorite animal with colored pencils, as well as showing implied texture and adding color using various values. Contrast was a color focus of this lesson, as students were to create an abstract background, that shows color contrast to their animal!

Kindness Poetry Paintings
September 2016
4th graders created "Kindness Poetry Paintings." We discussed kind adjectives, and as a class, we wrote compliments to describe our fellow classmates. Students used their compliments to turn it into a colorful work of art. We even got to mix paint colors!
One Point Perspective
February 2016
This drawing unit features each students' creative voice! We learned how to draw using the technique called, 1 Point Perspective. This technique can be challenging, but the end result is always amazing! When using 1 Point Perspective, the goal is to create a piece that seems to vanish into the distance at one point on the horizon line. Our famous artist link was Vincent van Gogh. We were inspired by his beautiful landscapes of Holland, and the way he creates visual texture within his work.Students were allowed to pick the subject of their piece, with either a cityscape or a landscape!

The Great Wave
December 2015
Fourth grade has just completed their printmaking unit. Students learned about the Japanese printer, Hokusai, and we analyzed his print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. You can see the volcano, Mt. Fuji, in the background, which is the highest peak in Japan! In a woodcut print, a picture is cut into a block of wood. It is then covered with ink and printed---or pressed---onto a sheet of paper. For our prints, we carved into a sheet of foam. We then used watercolor and salt to paint a beautiful colorful background. The results are amazing!
Origami Creatures
October 2015
Students are completing their non-clay sculptural unit! We have looked at some amazing images of different kinds of origami from Japan, and we have discussed the cultural meanings of specific origami forms. Students are creating their own origami bookmarks, using basic folding techniques. Then, students get to collage their own unique details to their bookmark, making it a monster, animal, or a character from pop culture!

Abstract Animal Paintings
September 2015
Fourth graders have just completed their artworks for our Square 1 Art Fundraiser. We have studied the artist and illustrator, Alex Beard. Alex Beard has emerged as one of his generation's most accomplished artist. His style usually features an animal with an abstract, creative twist. We discussed the meaning of Abstract art, as well as how to draw and capture the texture and details of animals. Contrast was also a focus of this lesson. Students were to create an abstract background, that shows color contrast to their animal! The results are so colorful!!

Welcome to 4th Grade!
For the first two weeks of school, students are reviewing rules and safety procedures in the art room. We are creating our first "miniature" artwork, which will turn into a large mural! All students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade are drawing a self-portrait with 1 different color scheme for each grade level. Put them all together, and you have one, GIANT, rainbow mural!!
